The Divine Mother

The Mother Principle In Our Lives

For many people, May’s Mothers Day will be about honoring the women and men who nurtured them. But what about The Great Mother, referred to in the Tao Te Ching as "Mother of the World" (also known as the Cosmic Mother) who gives birth to all things on earth and in the heavens? She is celebrated in almost every cosmology and mythology on this planet. Who/what is this every present source and  how can we connect with her?

To help me explore these questions, I e-chatted with Mytrae Meliana, author, holistic psychotherapist, sound healer, and musician whose work invokes the Divine Feminine.

Mytrae’s own story - a heroine's journey  - can be found in her memoir, Brown Skin Girl (Blue Leopard Media, 2020) and winner of the Independent Book Publishers' Gold Award.
In it she writes of her personal experiences of the Divine Feminine principle; magical and powerful. Such a force, she says, can transform “broken into beautiful.”

Q: Why did you write Brown Skin Girl?
A: I wrote Brown Skin Girl because I wanted to share with women that we can heal and create a life we desire, no matter how difficult, how traumatized, or how lost we may feel. The book’s goal is to offer hope and possibility to women with similar experiences; to encourage change.

Q: In finding yourself, you found the Divine Feminine. What is that?
A: The Divine Feminine is the feminine face of God. In the West, most people know the Divine as masculine, but the Divine is also Feminine. The Divine Feminine exists in many forms — as Goddesses, as Ascended Masters, and our own beautiful Mother Earth. Such a force transcends religions and is available to all.

Q: Tell us how the Divine Feminine has appeared throughout your life, your career, your arts.
A: I grew up in India, where everything and every being is considered sacred, where Mother Earth is the Divine Feminine. In her various forms and aspects, from the humblest huts and the grittiest streets to the wealthiest homes, she is acknowledged and worshipped.

A child, I felt her presence in Nature in trees and rocks and animals. As an adult, she has come to me in various forms, first as Kali, then as Mother Mary, during some of my most despairing times.

Mother Mary guided me with visions of myself as the Divine Feminine. Incredibly beautiful and powerful, this was far beyond what my mind could believe. Yet, it was unmistakable that this is who I am on a Soul level.

My work now includes sharing with how others can connect with her.

Q:  How is healing ones self as a woman from trauma the work of the divine feminine?
A: Women have a triple Feminine Wound: trauma, patriarchy, and disconnection from the Divine Feminine and their own Divinity. Healing is not only frees you from trauma, but also awakens you to who you are — a spiritual being. This involves not only to your Divine Feminine self, but also your Divine Masculine self.

I have found that for such work, we need a Divine Feminine guide to take us there — we cannot get there on our own.

Q:  You’re working on a few new projects that also embrace, perhaps, more directly, the power of the divine feminine. Can you tell us a little bit about that?
A: Im currently preparing materials, including a manuscript, workshops, and more that are rooted in the ancient feminine tradition of Shakta Tantra from India.
